You would have thought that five days of orienteering racing in the Lakes would be enough – but no, Paul & Lynne entered the last of the Clyde urban races. This one was based close to the Kelvinhall Art Gallery & Museum and so easy to get to on a Sunday morning. This was the area that was used for a Park World Tour event in the late 1990’s.

A contingent of six folks from EckO headed for this event 22nd – 27th August 2010. This was during the school term in Scotland so no EckO families were able to attend. Andy & Marieke, Alan, Carol, Paul & Lynne headed for ‘Carol’s house’ just north of Penrith. The event centre was Coniston, so there was quite a bit of travelling a couple of the days.

The Purple Thistle (PT) is a ‘barebones’ event. This means that there is quality orienteering on a technical area, but there are few extras. For example, pre-enter (no entries on the day), turn up and stand in a queue at the start with each competitor deciding when to go, no water at the finish. There is often an event campsite closeby. This year there was a large entry from EckO, spanning quite an age range as well.

R. I. P. has been said for the blue van as it went away on the back of a very fancy truck.

After looking around at various people carriers (mainly too short or the folding of the seats did not leave a flat area to sleep on) and also the updated Transporter we decided to test drive the new Transporter and a Volkswagen ‘Caddy Maxi Life’. I think I was keener on the latter as it might mean that I could load sea kayaks myself; it also was more like a car and so might be a better vehicle for general use as we also intended trading in the Corsa.

We visited my sister in Buckinghamshire for a few days and then had a wander around the Cotswolds and Malvern area before return north. I also carried out a couple of assessments while south. It turned out to be quite an eventful time!

After the Irish 3 Day Orienteering Event, Paul and I took the opportunity to explore the west of Donegal.

The weather was generally dry, bright and windy. There was one miserable wet day so we drove over to Letterkenny (via a good tea room at Glen Veagh National Park), went to the pictures and then the weather cleared.

Paul & I decided to head for Donegal as we had enjoyed our few days on the north coast of Northern Ireland in January. We had not had time to explore further west and this would be the ideal opportunity.

Barry the Baton (to give him his full title) is basically a piece of wood and he is being run around the coast in a clockwise direction by various groups of people. His journey began at the Blackpool Tower on 9th May 2010. He hopes to complete the journey and arrive back at Blackpool Tower ????
