On the weekend of 20th & 21st February I was working with a group of Duke of Edinburgh leaders who are mainly based in North Ayrshire. I was delivering a Teaching Orienteering course, parts 1 and 2. Beforehand it was arranged that we would be inside at a community centre in Saltcoats on the Saturday morning and the Sunday afternoon. The other sessions (Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning) would be at Eglinton Park, a 15 minute drive away.

Way back in the mists of time (around August 2009) Terry O’Brien asked if I would control the Scottish Night Champs (SNC) at Faskally near Pitlochry. The biennial 6 Day event is the largest event in Scotland. Over the years it has peaked at over 5000 competitors (in 1999 when it was held in conjunction with the World Championships) to about 2500 in 2001 when the event was cast into doubt by the occurrence of foot & mouth disease.

First of all, I must admit that I was not a fan of urban orienteering and did not bother to enter the races. So what has happened to change my mind? Quite a lot over the past couple of years is the answer.

Kerrera – an island just south of Oban, a short ferry journey, low-lying but with intricate contour detail and stunning views to Mull, the Garvellachs (the Islands of the Sea) and numerous other islands dotted around the Firth of Lorn.
All photos were taken by Iain Shepherd, INVOC. Many thanks for these Iain.
