A contingent of six folks from EckO headed for this event 22nd – 27th August 2010. This was during the school term in Scotland so no EckO families were able to attend. Andy & Marieke, Alan, Carol, Paul & Lynne headed for ‘Carol’s house’ just north of Penrith. The event centre was Coniston, so there was quite a bit of travelling a couple of the days.

The Purple Thistle (PT) is a ‘barebones’ event. This means that there is quality orienteering on a technical area, but there are few extras. For example, pre-enter (no entries on the day), turn up and stand in a queue at the start with each competitor deciding when to go, no water at the finish. There is often an event campsite closeby. This year there was a large entry from EckO, spanning quite an age range as well.

This is the alternative title for my experiences at the Irish 3 Day Orienteering Event, held near Lough Eske in western Donegal in June 2010.
Paul & I decided to head for Donegal as we had enjoyed our few days on the north coast of Northern Ireland in January. We had not had time to explore further west and this would be the ideal opportunity.

I have driven ‘through’ Erskine more times than I can count; I even spent six weeks on teaching practise in 1990 at the secondary school (Park Main HS) in the town. I never ever knew just what was lying behind the trees or just across the footbridge from the school.

April and May 2010 see the main races this year. The JK was at the start of April, followed by the British Middle Distance Championships on 17th April and then the British Individual and Relays over the weekend of 1st and 2nd May. The Scottish Championships are at the end of May.

We made the journey down to Devon for the JK and thought that we would spend most of the week after it exploring Dartmoor and the coast. Then we found out that there was the added attraction of a couple of other orienteering events in the area on the Wednesday and Thursday - this was described as the JK dessert.

Paul and Lynne were lured by the ‘sunny Devon’ image and travelled down to take part in the annual orienteering festival. A day later than anticipated we arrived at our Dartmoor holiday cottage.

I really am not sure whose idea the weekend was, but I basically agreed to co-ordinate it. We advertised the weekend and then . . . the responses came flooding in. I began to panic; where were we all going to stay? Could we possibly coach all these people, all fifty to sixty of them?
