Glasgow West End Orienteering

Paul approaching the last control

You would have thought that five days of orienteering racing in the Lakes would be enough – but no, Paul & Lynne entered the last of the Clyde urban races. This one was based close to the Kelvinhall Art Gallery & Museum and so easy to get to on a Sunday morning. This was the area that was used for a Park World Tour event in the late 1990’s.

BUT we had forgotten about Cowal Games and the fact that the ferries might be busy. We went down to catch the 8:30am ferry and were about fifth car in the queue so easily had a place on it – and then it left at 8:20am! I have heard that they were very busy a couple of hours later.

It was a lovely cool but sunny morning – ideal for a run around the streets. Paul entered the long course which had a straight line distance of 6km. Lynne was on the middle course at 3.2km and clocked 4.98km on the actual run. As with most urban events, map contact is important along with decision-making. Once you make a decision then stick with it rather than hesitate.

The streets were quiet and the courses lived up to expectations. I missed seeing a low level bridge over the River Kelvin and so used the road bridge. This meant an ‘interesting’ descent down a steep muddy bank much to the amusement of the Sunday morning push-chair walkers.

There was a relatively small turnout for the event but all returned with smiles. Some then went on through to Edinburgh to run at the ESOC Ultrasprint event. Two very contrasting races in one day. We returned home after the Glasgow race - after we had sampled the cafe in the Kelvinhall Art Gallery & Museum

I’m in the final preparation for the JEC sprints then Nopesport Urban event in St Andrews next week.  I though I was mapping from scratch however along the way I’ve unearthed a map of North Haugh and Lade braes drawn by ‘L Walker’ in 1974.  Is this you?  If so do you want a dusty copy of your original map.  It would be good to chat on the 25th.
